Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Viseu has not reached an agreement with the Social Security Service to keep the center open.
Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Viseu has not reached an agreement with the Social Security Service to keep the center open.
The temporary reception center for abused children in Viseu will close due to the loss of 700,000 euros, according to the Jornal de Notícias on Wednesday.
At stake is the Temporary Reception Center (CAT) of Santa Casa da Misericordia de Viseu, where 17 abused children have lived until this week.
According to JN, the decision to close the institution came from Santa Casa da Misericordia itself, which this year canceled a contract with the Social Security Service to study this social reaction due to the systematic losses of the institution – about 700 thousand euros in the last five years.
The newspaper also explains that Santa Casa da Misericórdia and Social Security have also agreed on the possibility of keeping the institution open, with the state acknowledging an increase in the financial allocation allocated per child, provided that no more than 15 children are admitted.
On the other hand, Santa Casa da Misericórdia didn’t want to be left without the 22 vacancies it had so far.
The closure of the institution left 18 people without work, laid off in the process of collective dismissal.
An employee of Santa Casa da Misericordia de Viseu, Adelino Costa, told Jornal de Notícias that the closure of CAT was the “worst thing” that has happened since he ran the institution and blamed Social Security for it has put economic interests at risk ahead of the interests of children.
Now 17 children will be distributed by host families and other institutions of the district.
