Sul do Tejo subway drivers started this Thursday at 00:00 a five-day strike, divided between full stop and overtimeand the company asked the authorities to introduce a minimum of services.
On this day, these professionals began an overtime strike that will end at midnight on Monday, January 2.
At the same time, they observe three days of complete shutdown between Friday, December 30th and Sunday, January 1st.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the company that operates the Metro Sul do Tejo, a light rail system in the municipalities of Almada and Seixal, in the Setúbal district.asked the authorities for the introduction of minimum services.
The reason for this stop is the lack of agreement between the workers and the company regarding the Agreement with the company, which is the main demand of the workers, according to the National Union of Drivers of Portuguese Railways (SMAQ).
“After the previous strikes that took place in this company, in order to unblock the conflict, SMAQ presented a counter proposal for negotiations in order to get closer to the positions of the company. However, this was not accepted,” the statement released today reads.
According to the union, Metro Transportes do Sul (MTS), the company that runs Metro Sul do Tejo, “answered too vaguely, objective and serious obligation on the dates of negotiations on the Company Agreement”.
Metro Transportes do Sul, in turn, criticizes the union, pointing out that a representative cadre of train drivers has gone on strike, ignoring wage increases beyond what was mentioned in the social consultation, and stressing that the strike will cause restrictions.
In a statement, the company mentions that it is facing two new strike notices issued by SMAQ in a regard that ignores “a salary increase identified for 2023 from 7.4% to 9.6% affecting all employees of the company, including drivers. operators included in this union.
Regarding minimum services, Metro Transportes do Sul says that “although SMAQ believes there is no need determination of minimum services”, he appealed to the state authorities and is “waiting for a decision from the ministerial guardianship.”
The company assures that, despite the strikes recorded in October and November, the management declared to SMAQ its readiness for dialogue and negotiations in order to find mutual understanding between the parties.
MTS assures that it has demonstrated its readiness to start negotiations on this issue, but, he adds, the union has now noted the strike, thereby demonstrating that “not interested in trading“.
