The above quote refers to 1963, when the initially dismissed commander of the 1st Czechoslovak Army Corps, and in 1945-1950 the Minister of Defense, experienced a rise again. Stalin’s successor Nikita Khrushchev, who, during a visit to Czechoslovakia in 1954, found out what the war hero General Svoboda was doing. When he found out that he was working as a digger for JZD in Groztyn, he made no secret of his displeasure.

Khrushchev’s horse

Ludwik Svoboda understood that with such a powerful “godfather” in the Kremlin, he could think of the highest positions. His ambitions far exceeded the positions achieved in the period 1954-1967. (Deputy and member of the Presidium of the Natiol Assembly, Deputy Chairman of the Union of Anti-Fascist Fighters, Head of the K. Gottwald Military Academy in Prague, Head of the Military History Institute). His political clumsiness hindered him on his way to the top, because other comrades knew how to intrigue much better, and the hero from Dukla knew little about behind-the-scenes battles.

Ten people from the castle: Antonin Novotny, the first comrade and the victory of socialism in Czechoslovakia

The halo of a fearless soldier and war hero came in handy only in the spring of 1968, when it was necessary to replace the deposed Antonin Novotny as president. In August of the same year, the invasion of the Soviet Army followed, in which Ludwik Svoboda led his unit during the war. Since then, there has been a debate about the role of “Svoboda” in those difficult days and weeks, especially during the Moscow negotiations between the Czechoslovak and Soviet delegations.

Defenders of Svoboda emphasize that his fearlessness prevented the seizure of power by a puppet worker-peasant government and saved the lives of reform leaders kidpped in the USSR. However, even Imre Nagy, who eventually led the Hungarian armed resistance to the Soviet regime, was not immediately executed by the Soviet authorities, but received almost two years for self-criticism. In the end, he was executed by the Hungarians themselves.

Dear Guys

Czech gratitude to President Svoboda for bringing “our sweet boys” home safely is an expression of a certain cowardice of the local society in the face of armed violence. And why should it be considered a victory to elimite the option of a collaborationist worker-peasant government from the game? Especially when all its supposed tasks were subsequently carried out by the reformers themselves, trembling before their functions?

Ten men from the Castle: Gustav Husak, “bourgeois tiolist” and symbol of normalization in …

In the end, the rise of the workers’ and peasants’ government, installed by Russian tanks, was thwarted in the first place by civilian resistance to the invasion, not by President Svoboda, who then put heavy pressure on the initially kidpped Communist politicians in Moscow to agree to Brezhnev’s terms. On the first anniversary of the invasion in August 1969, the reformers themselves broke up popular demonstrations in their support. Then what could they expect? And what can they complain about?

Ludwik Svoboda, since the beginning of World War II, an agent of the Soviet secret services and a Trojan horse of the Communist Party of the Czech Republic, who in 1945-48 only consciously played the role of a non-party defense minister. From today’s perspective, he was ultimately one of the few who actually made money from the Prague Spring. He remained in the presidency, probably due to his position in August 1968 and the following years. He was even re-elected in 1973. For most of his presidency, he acted as a sentimental symbol for those who, in their desperate quest to normalize, needed to believe in false legends.
