Recently, Czechs have resorted to shopping abroad, especially in Poland, where individual goods are usually up to a third cheaper than in our country. At the same time, it pays off for them, even if they drive a distance of more than a hundred kilometers. One of the key reasons for the price decline is lower VAT on basic food and other commodities, Pruza said.

“This is one of the two main keys. If the VAT on food in the Czech Republic has been reduced from 15% to 0%, then 15% in itself is a visible difference that would help many people. The second part is that there is no competition in the Czech Republic between suppliers,” he says.

However, the problems of high food prices in the Czech Republic indirectly affect Poles as well. They complain that the Czechs are robbing their shops during their trade raids.

“The Polish side did not react to this in any way. Moreover, if we recall the beginning of the covid, then in March 2020 there were photographs of Czech stores with empty shelves. Before the arrival of the goods was always a few hours. We are not in a situation, and the Poles are not in a situation where they do not have enough food. When an event occurs, the product is simply not available for a while. I wouldn’t worry about it,” Pruza recalled.

According to the president of the union, in the long run, Poland could even benefit from a higher Czech interest in shopping abroad.

“These are higher turnover of merchants, higher tax payments to the Polish state budget. In addition, when Czechs go shopping there, they often fill up there, buy more cigarettes and go out for lunch. Even in the total amount, this is a plus for the Poles. This is a big minus for the Czech treasury,” he assessed the situation.

It is said that the problems that Poles face due to the influence of Czech buyers are mainly caused by merchants’ planning.

“It’s about the store’s ability to have well-planned logistics. If there is a long-term experience of how the behavior of buyers and the number of buyers has changed, then every normal store will plan its logistics in such a way that this does not happen. That means hiring two more people to replenish the shelves. From the turnover that the stores have from Czech purchases, these two people will be paid several times more, ”Pruza said in response to the complaints of the Poles.

“The Poles can. If anyone, then the Poles are very good business people and will find a way. It is rather an attempt by a few politicians to score cheap points. In the same way that Czech politicians defined themselves in relation to German clients, it is the same in all countries. This is just a political game,” he pointed out the real reason for the discontent of our neighbors.
