Sharka Homfrey has no reason to deny that her twenty-four essays, which were published collectively in October under the title Why Are We So Angry?, can be described as feminist literature. He has long paid attention to gender differences, although because of this he became the object of sweeping comments. “I experience what many women experience in the public sphere. These are attacks on appearance, various forms of fat-shaming, an opinion about how my family and sex life looks, which is based on the fact that someone, having seen me in a photo, immediately forms an opinion on how it should look in my life, and he tells me everything, including the recommendation that if I solve this problem, I won’t have to annoy people with some evil book and everyone will be happy,” she admits with the understanding she has gained over time.

She is often accused of hating men. “The idea that feminists hate men and persecute women has no basis in fact. It is based on some impressions,” refutes one of the myths, stigmas and taboos that have accompanied the women’s movement since its inception and still exist in the Czech Republic. “We can say that some of the “historical trends” of feminism today in our country have not been overcome to a large extent, and some have really been overcome. But we can’t say that we don’t need feminism in today’s society to frame issues and promote them. It is still useful, even though it continues to evolve, opening up new perspectives for us. It reacts to the development of society, to how, for example, old inequalities do not disappear or, on the contrary, new ones are created or deepened, ”says Homfrey.

According to her, the first differences begin to appear already in the pretal period, when parents decide how to approach the upbringing of their daughter. Others are just preparing to enter the education system, at an economically productive age, when there is pressure on partnerships and families. And, paradoxically, relief from ubiquitous expectations does not come even in old age. “We take care of our whole life, we are expected to take care of all our environment, including our aging parents, in addition to children, which we have to take care of until relative old age, this is called the phenomenon of the so-called sandwich. generation. And the moment women reach a certain younger older age, they find out that after all that journey of life, and then how they tried to work, somehow function, how they took care of their families, that they have a small pension, or that they would still like to work and, perhaps, there is no longer any interest in them,” he describes everyday reality.

The author of the book sees the way out in a greater representation of women in politics and in emphasizing the topic in public discussion. “The way political representation as a whole looks, to some extent, determines what kind of life experience they have and what may or may not seem important to them. And so the challenge, especially for the broadest constituency, is to broadcast their demands a little more intensely and ideally, as some of my more politically engaged friends say: “Got to run, run and run!” move forward to dampen the influence of conservative Christian and other religious groups, the so-called corrupt West rrative, or the tendency to maintain the status quo.

Why is the current situation problematic not only for women, but also for men? What does it mean to be a Czech feminist and what are her ambitions? What gender pressures does she face persolly? And will she become involved in politics herself? Columnist, lawyer and trade unionist Sharka Homphrey answered these questions and more.
