One of the first things you notice when you arrive in London at that time was the sheer amount of dirt on the streets. Unfortutely, it wasn’t dirt. At the end of the 19th century, 300 thousand horses lived in the metropolis. They produced 1,000 tons of excrement daily. Small children were hired in the city to clean up the droppings as soon as they fell to the ground. But given the number of animals, it was already a losing battle. The River Thames, which crosses London, has also been filled with such waste, in this case of anthropogenic origin.
The air was filled with soot and smoke. It is said that it is easy to tell which of the sheep in Regent’s Park has been in London the longest. And just how black her fur was. The notorious mists from time to time covered London with completely unbreathable air. In the 19th century, they were mentioned in the anls more than ten times more often than in the 18th. If you belonged to the upper classes, you had to wash your hands and face several times a day. Otherwise, no one would have to know about your social status.

But people from the lower social strata fared even worse. The only access to water was a pump, which the apartment building owners used for only 2-3 hours a week. It is logical that queues lined up for her, quarrels and fights began. So the poor people went to bathe in the Thames, various cals and things like that.
Generally poor sanitary conditions led to devastating epidemics of cholera, typhoid and other diseases. They were significantly limited only by the construction of the sewer system, which took place in the second half of the 19th century.
