Gargamel spends most of his time at his hut concocting tricks to eat the Smurfs, or at least turn them into gold. Babiš hasn’t been in the presidential super debate, though he probably doesn’t want to eat his opponents, honey, that’s his. The arrangement of the tables spoke eloquently of the threat he posed to the Smurf village: the missing evil wizard had a seat reserved right in the middle.

Other important characters appeared next to him: the wise and always reasoble Papa Smurf, played by Peter Pavel, and the charming Smurfette, played by Danushe Nerudova. Other Smurfs who had specific roles stood around. Marek Hilscher hesitated between Snilk and Trubka, Yaroslav Bashta between Lenokh and Gzhout, Karel Divish between Smelone and Veitaha…

But the acting – with the exception of state actors Pavel and Nerudova – was not very convincing. Basta wanted to thank the audience with a reprise of his most famous role, the exit from Česká soda, including the message “I would like to respond to this”, but it was just a mechanical replay. And this protagonist built his lines on repetition: no matter what the Narrator, that is, the moderator Martin Rzeznicek, asked him, Basta still always grumbled about censorship.

Divish chose the strategy of spitting on the leading counter-candidates as soon as possible, and then… then he didn’t know what. Harmless aggression may have earned him half a percentage point in the audience. However, the outwardly sunny Hielscher turned out to be the main villain. He pompously appealed to gentlemanship and equal space for all involved, only to steal the stage for himself and fill precious time with meaningless gibberish. If he forgot his lines and stomped around, he should have asked the director to take a sip; if he deliberately improvised, he probably learned from his colleague Mirko Donutil and his endless humorless solos in variety shows.

The appearance of these three gentlemen became a shameful pleasure, it was impossible not to wait for them; other players were not so alive. But why did the idea of butter persistently come to mind when looking at Pavel Fischer? As for the rest, one could wonder what drugs they were probably taking. Diviš were pure amphetamines, Hilšer mushrooms sliced ecstasy, Zima beer ten. Basta, apparently, does not take anything, unfortutely, not even prescribed medications.

The camera quite sensibly did not try to exaggerate, it honestly alterted about three sizes and angles, and its biggest boldness was the use of a split image. The action in the historic building of the Natiol Museum might have looked good in the script, but the rooms seemed cold and echoed badly; in addition, traffic on the highway was disrupted. The minimalist scenography, apparently, was supposed to make a dignified and sober impression, but the light stripes on the walls moved as if chaotically, and at times seemed to create a Ukrainian flag. In addition, all the colors were commandingly flooded with blue, which at the same time echoed Neruda’s costume. If you’re inspired by the Smurfs, it would be nice to at least add some vegetation around the corners.

The Czech Republic is looking for a female president. But if a more solid candidate does not appear, he will not find him.

The plot unfolded rather calmly, the topics of conversation (it was not a debate in the truest sense of the word) alterted smoothly, and Gargamel did not burst into the village even at the last moment. Envelope questions from well-known public figures, or a note about how leading presidential candidates “speak” about themselves in sign language, served as a reminder of themselves: Babiš mostly gesticulates like a grandmother.

The only dramatic turn on the air came at the very end, when trade unionist, leftist and ČSSD voter Stršedula announced his candidacy and called on his constituents to vote for Neruda. You will probably listen to him; Babish is very happy about this “kiss of death”.

Czech TV posted on its channels during the Super Debate headlines “Put ‘Em High”, “Stockholm Syndrome” or “Burn My Doll”; is he trying to tell us something? Let’s see what films will accompany the continuation of the show. Yes, a sequel is coming out on January 26th that could have avoided the mistakes of “one”. It definitely won’t have a lot of characters and probably not a lot of footage. Blue is hard to tell.
