The Qatar Championship was the last major event to feature ITV Technical Director Roger Pierce. Then he should go on a well-deserved retirement. But instead came an unexpected death.

“It is with great sadness and grief that I must inform you that Roger Pierce passed away last night in his hotel room in Qatar.” This was announced by ITV sportscaster Mark Demuth. Pierce himself had worked at the station for 43 long years and was due to finish his job with this employer on the last day of that year.

“I understand that this news will come as a big shock to everyone. His next of kin have been informed, as has the team here in Doha. Roger has been very popular in the industry for many years. Everyone who worked with Roger enjoyed his company and couldn’t help but smile when he was around.” a colleague remembered the late director.

“Roger was the man who arranged everything. Whether he was in a minor non-league stadium or working on a complex technical operation like this World Cup.” added Demuth, who said Pierce’s colleagues were indifferent to disruptive news and shared a sense of loss.

The radio station that Roger worked for paid tribute to his late employee during a match between Wales and the United States on Monday.
