The saddest birthday he could imagine. On Tuesday, Czech racer Ales Loprais (43) became an unwitting participant in a traffic accident with his car at the famous Dakar, in which an Italian fan died. The nephew of legendary helmsman Karel Loprais (†72) later released a statement expressing dismay at the whole situation, as well as showing footage straight from the car. The video from the cabin confirmed what was already obvious: the Czech pilot did not happen to see the Italian lying on the track!

Motorsport was shocked on Tuesday evening by the news of the death of an Italian fan during the Dakar. Czech driver Ales Loprais was driving a truck that collided with a spectator who commented on the tragedy on social media via video early Wednesday morning.

This shows that the situation affected Loprize psychologically. Initially, he had no idea that someone was under the wheels of his car. The Italian fan lay down just behind the dune and thus was out of the view of the film crew, as evidenced by the footage directly from the car. From the video that Loprais showed to the fans, it is clear that no one in the fireplace had the opportunity not only to see a person on the track, but also to realize that there was no collision.

“Unfortunately, he found a spot under a dune and we didn’t see him. With this, I would like to express my condolences to the family, relatives and friends, Loprais said in a broken voice that the Italian fan wanted to take a picture of the car that the film crew was driving through. The Italian survived the accident itself, but about three hours after the collision, he suffered a heart attack and subsequently died.

Loprais learned of the tragedy much later at the bivouac, just before going to bed: “Human life was destroyed and de facto by my actions because I turned the wheel. But I have to say that I didn’t know about it at all. None of the crew either. We have onboard and external videos to prove it. However, this does not change the fact that human life has died out.” said the rider, who was otherwise fine before the fatal crash, devastated.
