Everything happened incredibly quickly, as is usually the case in this type of race. The race of specially adapted cars, the so-called dragsters, takes place on a long flat area, where both racers try to develop the maximum possible speed and thereby cross the finish line before the rival. Sam belonged to the very top of the industry, and his departure upset the entire community.
During the fateful race, Fenech was driving at about 400 km/h when his car lost traction and flew into the air, where it collided with the camera tower. The dragster shattered into pieces, and even attempts to immediately revive it had no chance of success. The life of the operator is not in danger, after the accident he was taken to the hospital.
The leadership of the fateful race also expressed regret in an official statement. “Top Fuel Racing Australia is deeply saddened to announce that Fabietti Racing Doorslammer driver Sam Fenech has died as a result of injuries sustained in an accident at Willowbank Raceway. We express our condolences and support to the family and all his team. The accident is being investigated by the police, so we will not be making any further comment at this time.”
