The European Parliament launched this Wednesday a campaign to collect generators in European Union (EU) cities. and power transformers to help Ukrainians spend this winter, given the destruction of infrastructure by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The campaign, called “Geradores de Esperança”, launched on this day by the European Assembly, together with a network of more than 200 largest cities in Europe, Eurocities, aims to “assemble power generators and transformers for Ukraine,” the leader of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, explained at a press conference.

Launched on the sidelines of the organization’s plenary meeting in the French city of Strasbourg, the campaign targets EU cities to “in a very practical and concrete way bring energy and clean water to hospitals and people, as well as to provide day-to-day services,” said Roberta Metsola.

“I call on all cities, towns and regions across Europe to join the campaign,” the official urged, also asking 705 MEPs to join the initiative.

These generators will help keep major facilities in the country running, powering hospitals, schools, water facilities, care centers, shelters, telephone poles and more.

The initiative comes at a time when about 10 million Ukrainians were left without power as a result of Russian attacks on critical civilian infrastructure such as power grids.

“This parliament [Europeu] and the European Union have shown remarkable solidarity with Ukraine on the humanitarian, military and financial levels. Now they need practical support for Ukrainians to survive the winter” said Roberta Metsola.
