The European Parliament (EP) this Thursday denounced the deteriorating situation of women in Afghanistan under the Taliban regime and assured that respect for their rights must be a condition for the international community to maintain contact with the Taliban.

In a resolution adopted by 532 votes in favor, the European Parliament criticized the infringement of women’s rights in the country and attacks on schools who greet the girlsand which worsened after the Taliban returned to power in August 2021 following the withdrawal of US troops.

In this sense, deputies urged the Taliban to ensure the participation of women in public life and that the international community puts this practice as a condition for dialogue with Kabul, and recalling the promises made by the Taliban when they came to power to bring women back into the education system.

The resolution regrets that access to information in Afghanistan has become more difficult, in addition to increased pressure on various civil society organizations.
