Bloc Eskerda’s coordinator on Tuesday expressed “great concern” at the reception given to refugees from Ukraine in Portugal, warning that many “have no support on basic issues” and asking them not to be left “in the void”.

Speaking to reporters after visiting the Temporary Reception Center in Lisbon, Katarina Martins stressed that Bloco de Esquerda (BE) “very concerned” with the reception that is being made in Portugal for “refugees in general, but especially for those decisions that were made for people who come from Ukraine.”

Accompanied by European Left Party President Walter Bayer, Katarina Martins said the European Union says it is “in solidarity with the victims of the war” but “there are great reception difficulties” on the ground.

In the case of Portugal, Katarina Martins stressed, “the decision was made not to give people the status of refugees, but temporary host status“taking into account the fact that it was believed that immigrants from Ukraine would remain in the country “for a short time.”

But “the war has been going on for almost a year now. People have been here for a long time, and at the moment they have no support. And therefore, they may have a temporary reception, they may have permission to stay in Portugal, but they do not have support in basic matters and at the moment there is a severe social crisis, namely with housing, ”he warned.

The BE coordinator also indicated that in the group of refugees from Ukraine, those who do not have Ukrainian citizenship are in “An even more difficult situation”as in some cases it “takes months” for them to obtain “even a temporary permit” for admission.

“Therefore, these are people who are in an unsettled situation, cannot study, work, live their lives without any support,” he stressed.

Katarina Martins stressed that refugees who fled from Ukraine, but do not have the citizenship of this country, “are in Portugal only because Portugal welcomed them, decided to welcome them as victims of the war, fleeing the war.“.

“And so we urgently need to realize that we are not accepting people for several weeks. People need support, and therefore refugee status is needed because he has support,” he stressed.

Regarding non-Ukrainian refugees fleeing the war, Katarina Martins defended that “they should have basic rights in Portugal”.

“We have decided to welcome them, we cannot leave them in the void now. We are talking, in particular, about university students from such distant countries as, for example, Azerbaijan, who suddenly find themselves in Portugal in an absolutely unbearable situation,” he said.
