Cholera has claimed the lives of two people in northwest Syria following an earthquake this month. With reference to today’s statement by the opposition Syrian Civil Defense, Reuters reports.
Another 568 people contracted cholera as the earthquake badly damaged the water supply network. The Western-backed Civil Defense, also known as the White Helmets, is the main rescue force on Syria’s border with Turkey, the most earthquake-hit part of Syria.
cholera is high an infectious disease that affects the digestive system. It is caused by bacteria transmitted through contaminated water or food. Appears acute diarrhea, vomiting and dehydration. It can be cured with timely medication, but otherwise it can kill an infected person within a few hours.
According to the United Nations, the 7.7 and 7.6 earthquakes that hit southeastern Turkey and northern Syria on February 6 killed more than 44,000 people in Turkey and about 6,000 people in Syria, mostly in the rebels in the northwest.
