South Korean authorities today arrested a man who opened the emergency exit door of a plane minutes before landing in the city of Daegu. The incident caused panic among the passengers on board, but the plane eventually landed safely, Reuters reported.
An Asiana Airlines plane with 194 people on board was heading to Daegu from the South Korean tourist island of Jeju. No one was hurt in the incident, but nine teenagers were hospitalized with breathing problems.
“I thought the plane had exploded… Passengers near the open door seemed to be losing consciousness”, — described the situation 44-year-old passenger.
In a video allegedly filmed by one of the passengers and shown on South Korean television, the plane’s emergency exit can be seen open as the passengers watch the wind from outside.
South Korea’s Ministry of Transportation said in a statement that a suspected male, aged between 30 and 40, has been taken into custody and is being investigated on suspicion of violating aviation safety regulations. It is unknown why the emergency exit in question opened. According to the BBC news site, the man tried to jump out of the plane after the door opened about 200 meters above the ground.
